Whole wheat beer bread (and an alternative breakfast version!)

There is no yummier quick bread than beer bread. It is super easy to make, is chewy on the outside and soft on the inside, and is just amazing!  We always have it when I make Guiness Stew because it just pairs so nicely!


1 1/2 cups all purpose flour

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

4 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 

1 1/2 teaspoon salt

1/3 cup packed brown sugar

12 oz beer (we love to use Guinness or Smithwicks)


-Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

-Lightly grease a 9×5 loaf pan (crisco works well!)

-In a large mixing bowl, combine all the dry ingredients.

-Pour in the beer and stir until well mixed.  The dough will be very thick.

-Press the dough into the bread pan and bake for 50-60 minutes.

Alternative breakfast version:

-Replace the 12 oz beer with 12 oz lemon lime soda (sprite, Sierra mist, 7 up) 

-Add a chopped apple and some ground cinnamon

-Bake as directed.

I haven’t tried this yet in a roll form, but I sure it could work to place smalle shaped mounds on a greased cookie sheet and reduce the cooking time.  I’ll have to try this next time and update this post with cooking times.
